Contradictions

God told Abraham, “Leave your country …and I will bless you.”

Abraham and Sarah packed up their belongs, left the Fertile Crescent and headed for the far-off  land of promised blessings.

Now there was a famine in the land … the famine was severe.

HOW IS THIS WORKING FOR YOU, ABRAHAM …?

God promised Abraham more offspring than the stars in the sky or the sand on the seashore.

Abraham rejected the fertility gods of the Canaanites and served the one God Almighty.

Now Sarah, Abraham’s wife had borne him no children…and they were already old and well advanced in years and Sarah was past the age of childbearing.

HOW IS THIS WORKING FOR YOU, ABRAHAM …?

God’s way  of leading us often contradicts our assumptions about how God will work. During those seemingly-contradictory times in our lives, our faith must be as Abraham’s. “Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations.”

A FADED SIGNPOST

In the allegorical Hind’s Feet on High Places, Much Afraid’s path ends at a precipice and the only forward movement is down a steep pathway to a vast desert. She laments, “He called me up to the High Places, and this is an absolute contradiction of all that he promised.”

The Shepherd replies, “No, it is not contradiction, only postponement for the best to become possible.” (Hinds Feet on High Places: Hannah Hurnard)
