I would like a brash buzzer that warns me to STOP when I start to cross Your boundaries.
Your warning Spirit, though, is like a soft chime.
I find it easy to dismiss that gentle warning.
I find it easy to pretend I’ve only heard the echo of a conscience
Shaped by someone else’s “dos” and “don’ts.”
I find it easy to rush ahead absolving myself
With a “Stop me! Stop me, if it’s wrong” rote.
God will not yell, “STOP!”
God will not yell, “LISTEN!”
I must take time
Or I will find myself
On the wrong side of God’s boundary lines.
A spiritual life requires discipline because we need to learn to listen to God, who constantly speaks but whom we seldom hear. Henri J. M. Nouwen
